These miracles showed Christ to be a controller and conqueror of Satan, a healer of diseases. Verse Luke 4:42. _AND THE PEOPLE SOUGHT HIM_] Rather, _Sought_ him _earnestly_. Instead of εζητουν, _sought_, I read, επεζητουν, _earnestly sought_. This reading is supported by ABCDFLMS-V, and more than seventy others. _Wetstein_ and _Griesbach_ have both received it into the text. The people had tasted the good word of God, and now they cleave to Christ with their whole heart. _Hearing_ the words of Christ, and _feeling_ the influence of his Spirit upon the soul, will attract and influence the heart; and indeed nothing else can do it. _AND STAYED HIM_] Strove _to detain him_; κατειχον αυτον _they_ _caught hold of him_. Thus showing their great earnestness to be farther instructed....

EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

OTHER HEALINGS (Mark 1:32 *, Matthew 8:16 f.*, Matthew 4:23 *). The medical interest of Lk. here appears strongly. He distinguishes ordinary ailments from cases of demoniacal possession. Luke 4:43 is an announcement made earlier by Mk. (Mark 1:15); Lk. has had to defer it through his treatment of the Nazareth episode. LUKE 4:43.
