12-21 Nothing could be less the result of human foresight than the events here related. But our Lord knows all things about us before they come to pass. If we admit him, he will dwell in our hearts. The Son of man goes, as it is written of him, as a lamb to the slaughter; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! God's permitting the sins of men, and bringing glory to himself out of them, does not oblige them to sin; nor will this be any excuse for their guilt, or lessen their punishment....

Verse Mark 14:13. _BEARING A PITCHER OF WATER_] How correct is the foreknowledge of Jesus Christ! Even the _minutest_ circumstances are comprehended by it! An _honest employment_, howsoever _mean_, is worthy the attention of God; and even a man bearing a _pitcher of_ _water_ is marked in all his steps, and is an object of the merciful regards of the Most High. This man was employed in carrying home the water which was to be used for baking the unleavened bread on the following day; for on that day it was not lawful to carry any: hence they were obliged to fetch it on the preceding evening....

The killing of the Paschal lamb took place on the first of the seven days during which the festival lasted, and during the whole of which they used unleavened bread. PREPARATION FOR THE LAST SUPPER. Mk. regards the last supper as the Passover; contrast John 13:29; John 18:28; John 19:14. In this incident Jesus shows a supernatural knowledge of circumstances as yet unrealised, as in the case of the triumphal entry (Mark 11:1 f.). But is it not possible that here we have some pre-arrangement intended to baffle Judas and the chief priests? The room, at any rate, is ready, furnished with carpets and couches....
