Every edible animal was to be prepared for food by being slaughtered-so that the flesh might be entirely emptied of the blood. But should such an animal-even an ox or a sheep-from disease or wounds, die a natural death, its carcass was unclean, and contact with it would occasion defilement for a brief period....

AND IF ANY BEAST OF WHICH YE MAY EAT DIE,.... Any clean beast, as the ox, sheep, goat, deer, c. what, if rightly killed, is very lawful to eat of but if it died of itself through any distemper, or was torn by the wild beasts, so the Targum of Jonathan: HE THAT TOUCHETH THE CARCASS THEREOF SHALL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVEN; not the bones, nerves, horns, hoofs, or skin, as Jarchi observes; these might be handled, because some of them, at least, were wrought up into one instrument or another, by artificers, for use and service, but the flesh of them might not be touched; whoever did touch it was ceremonially unclean, and might not go into the sanctuary, or have conversation with men, until the evening of the day in which this was done....

(LEVITICUS 11-16) THE LAW OF CLEAN AND UNCLEAN This section deals with the subject of ceremonial uncleanness and the method of its purification. Four main types of uncleanness are referred to, viz. that of meats (Leviticus 11:1), of carcases (Leviticus 11:24), of leprosy (Leviticus 13:14), and of certain bodily functions and conditions (Leviticus 12, 15). The effect of ceremonial uncleanness is that it disqualifies a person for the worship of God. CHAPTER 11 CHAPTER 11:1 TO 15:33 RULES ABOUT WHAT IS *CLEAN AND WHAT IS *UNCLEAN The most important idea in Leviticus is *holiness. This means two things. * If you have ‘*holiness’, you are very, very good. Really, only God is holy. That is, only God is perfect; only God has no *sin. But he says that his people are holy too. They become holy because they belong to him. And he is changing their lives. * Because his people are holy, they must be separate for him. In Chapter s 11 to 15, we find rules that make God’s people separate from other people.

AND if ANY BEAST. — That is, a clean animal, which is both bisulcous and ruminant, but which has not been properly slaughtered, having died from any disease or accident. During the second Temple, the law here enacted was restricted to quadrupeds, domestic or wild, but was not applicable to birds and fishes. HE THAT TOUCHETH THE CARCASE. — The carcase, in this case, is to be regarded as the dead body of an unclean animal (see Leviticus 11:24), and defiles by contact. (See also Leviticus 17:15.)
