10-17 The people followed Jesus, and though they came unseasonably, yet he gave them what they came for. He spake unto them of the kingdom of God. He healed those who had need of healing. And with five loaves of bread and two fishes, Christ fed five thousand men. He will not see those that fear him, and serve him faithfully, want any good thing. When we receive creature-comforts, we must acknowledge that we receive them from God, and that we are unworthy to receive them; that we owe them all, and all the comfort we have in them, to the mediation of Christ, by whom the curse is taken away. The blessing of Christ will make a little go a great way. He fills every hungry soul, abundantly satisfies it with the goodness of his house. EXPOSITION LUKE 9:1 _The Master sends out the twelve on a mission_. LUKE 9:1 THEN HE CALLED HIS TWELVE DISCIPLES TOGETHER. The Galilee ministry was just over; _outwardly_ it had been a triumphant success; vast crowds had been gathered together. The Master was generally welcomed with a positive enthusiasm; the people heard him gladly. Here and there were visible, as in the eases of the woman who touched him and the synagogue ruler who prayed him to heal his little daughter, just related (Luke 8:1.), conspicuous examples of a strange or mighty faith; but the success, the Master knew too well, was only on the surface. THE FEEDING OF THE MULTITUDE (Mark 6:31 *, Matthew 14:13 *). Lk., like Mt., abbreviates Mk He fixes the scene at Bethsaida; in Mk. Jesus crosses the lake to that town afterwards, but perhaps Mk. is wrong and means Capernaum. Lk. omits the walking of Jesus on the water, and other material found in Mark 6:45 to Mark 8:26, _e.g._ (_a)_ the feeding of the 4000, (_b)_ the debate on the washing of hands and the traditions of the elders, and (_c_) the healing of the Greek woman's daughter. _We have no more but five loaves and two fishes_ Compare Numbers 11:22. It was Andrew who first mentioned this fact in a tentative sort of way. The little boy (_paidarion_) who carried them seems to have been in attendance on the Apostles; evidently this was the food which they had brought for their own supply, and it proves their simplicity of life, for _barley loaves_(John 6:9) are the food of the poor (2 Kings 4:42; Judges 7:13; Ezekiel 13:19; Ezekiel 4:9)....
