Before He cried He was answered, and while he was yet speaking He was heard. Blessed interruption to prayer this! AND HIS RAIMENT WAS WHITE AND GLISTERING. [ exastraptoon (G1823)]. Matthew says "His face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light" (Matthew 17:2). Mark's description is, as usual, intense and vivid: "His raiment became shining" [ stilbonte (G4744)] or 'glittering,' "exceeding white as snow [ leuka (G3022)...

28-36 Christ's transfiguration was a specimen of that glory in which he will come to judge the world; and was an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him. Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. Our Lord Jesus, even in his transfiguration, was willing to speak concerning his death and sufferings. In our greatest glories on earth, let us remember that in this world we have no continuing city. What need we have to pray to God for quickening grace, to make us lively! Yet that the disciples might be witnesses of this sign from heaven, after awhile they became awake, so that they were able to give a full account of what passed. But those know not what they say, that talk of making tabernacles on earth for glorified saints in heaven....

THE TRANSFIGURATION (Mark 9:2 *, Matthew 17:1 *). Again Jesus is pictured as praying. The theme of His conversation with Moses and Elijah is given, viz. His decease (lit., exodus; significant in connexion with Moses) at Jerusalem. In Luke 9:32 text is better than _mg._ The pronouns in Luke 9:34 are ambiguous: them and the second they may mean Jesus, Moses and Elijah. In Luke 9:36 follow _mg._ Lk. omits the discussion concerning Elijah....

GLISTERING. effulgent, or lightening forth (as though from internal light). The Eng. "glister" is from the Anglo-Saxon _glisian. to_ shine, or glitter....

_as he prayed_ The enquiry whether this heavenly brightness came from within, or as when the face of Moses shone by reflection from communion with God, seems irreverent and idle; but we may say that the two things are practically one. _the fashion of his countenance was alteread_ "His face did shine as the sun," Matthew 17:2. It is interesting to see how St Luke avoids the word "He was _metamorphosed_" which is used by the other Synoptists. He was writing for Greeks, in whose mythology that verb was vulgarised by foolish associations. _white and glistering_ Literally, "_lightning forth,"_as though from some _inward_radiance. St Matthew compares the whiteness of His robes to the light (Luke 17:2), St Mark to the snow ...
