For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. FOR THE SON OF MAN IS NOT COME TO DESTROY MEN'S LIVES, BUT TO SAVE THEM - a saying truly divine, of which, all His miracles-for salvation, never destruction-were one continued illustration. AND THEY WENT TO ANOTHER VILLAGE - illustrating His own precept (), "When they persecute you in one city, flee ye to another." Tischendorf and Tregelles greatly curtail the text in this passage, leaving out all that we here enclose in brackets: . [Even as Elias.] . 51-56 The disciples did not consider that the conduct of the Samaritans was rather the effect of national prejudices and bigotry, than of enmity to the word and worship of God; and through they refused to receive Christ and his disciples, they did not ill use or injure them, so that the case was widely different from that of Ahaziah and Elijah. Nor were they aware that the gospel dispensation was to be marked by miracles of mercy. But above all, they were ignorant of the prevailing motives of their own hearts, which were pride and carnal ambition. Of this our Lord warned them. It is easy for us to say, Come, see our zeal for the Lord! and to think we are very faithful in his cause, when we are seeking our own objects, and even doing harm instead of good to others....

Verse 56. _AND THEY WENT TO ANOTHER VILLAGE._] Which probably did entertain them; being, perhaps, without the Samaritan borders. The words, _Ye know not of what spirit ye are; for the Son of man_ _is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them_, are wanting in ABCEGHLS-V, and in many others. _Griesbach_ leaves the latter clause out of the text. It is probable that the most ancient MSS. read the passage thus: _But he turned, and rebuked them, and said,_ _Ye know not of what spirit ye are. And they went to another _ _village_. FOR THE SON OF MAN ... - You should imitate, in your spirit, the Son of man. “He” came not to destroy. If he had come for that purpose, he would have destroyed these Samaritans; but he came to save. He is not soon angry. “He” bears patiently opposition to himself, and “you” should bear opposition to “him.” You should catch his spirit; temper your zeal like his; seek to do good to those who injure you and him; be mild, kind, patient, and forgiving....
