57-62 Here is one that is forward to follow Christ, but seems to have been hasty and rash, and not to have counted the cost. If we mean to follow Christ, we must lay aside the thoughts of great things in the world. Let us not try to join the profession of Christianity, with seeking after worldly advantages. Here is another that seems resolved to follow Christ, but he begs a short delay. To this man Christ first gave the call; he said to him, Follow me. Religion teaches us to be kind and good, to show piety at home, and to requite our parents; but we must not make these an excuse for neglecting our duty to God. Here is another that is willing to follow Christ, but he must have a little time to talk with his friends about it, and to set in order his household affairs, and give directions concerning them. EXPOSITION LUKE 9:1 _The Master sends out the twelve on a mission_. LUKE 9:1 THEN HE CALLED HIS TWELVE DISCIPLES TOGETHER. The Galilee ministry was just over; _outwardly_ it had been a triumphant success; vast crowds had been gathered together. The Master was generally welcomed with a positive enthusiasm; the people heard him gladly. Here and there were visible, as in the eases of the woman who touched him and the synagogue ruler who prayed him to heal his little daughter, just related (Luke 8:1.), conspicuous examples of a strange or mighty faith; but the success, the Master knew too well, was only on the surface. AND HE SAID UNTO ANOTHER, FOLLOW ME,.... According to Matthew, one of his disciples, who had attended him some time, and whom he now called to the ministerial work; Matthew 8:20. The Ethiopic version reads, "another said to him, shall I not follow thee?" but without any foundation: they are certainly the words of Christ, directed to another person, at the same time he met with the former: BUT HE SAID, LORD, SUFFER ME FIRST TO GO AND BURY MY FATHER; MATTHEW 8:21....

LUKE 9:59 @Ku,rie(# {C} The omission of ku,rie from B* D syrs _al_ is puzzling; what motive would have prompted copyists to delete it? On the other hand, the word might well have been added, either from ver. Luke 9:61 or from the parallel in Matthew 8:21. Since, however, the absence of ku,rie may have been due to a transcriptional blunder (eipe= k=e= epitre'on), it was thought safer to retain the word in the text, but to enclose it within square brackets indicating doubt that it has a right to stand there....

ASPIRANTS TO DISCIPLESHIP (Matthew 8:19 *), Lk.'s setting is preferred by some to Mt.'s, and his version of the second case (Luke 9:59 = Matthew 8:21) in which Jesus begins, and the man is not yet a disciple, is certainly better, with its addition Go thou and publish, etc. The third instance is peculiar to Lk. It reminds us of Elisha's call by Elijah, 1 Kings 19:20, but a greater than Elijah is here. Luke 9:62 is a great saying which has had incalculable influence....
