Luke 9:31

Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. WHO APPEARED IN GLORY AND SPAKE [ elegon (G3004 ), RATHER, 'AND WERE SPEAKING'] OF HIS DECEASE, [ teen (G3588) exodon (G1841) autou (G846)] - 'of His exodus;' 'His exit,' or 'His departure.' Beautiful euphemism (or softened expression) for death, which Peter, who witnessed the scene, uses in his second Epistle to express his own death, and the use of which single term seems to have recalled the whole scene by a sudden rush of recollection, which he accordingly describes in language of uncommon grandeur ...

28-36 Christ's transfiguration was a specimen of that glory in which he will come to judge the world; and was an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him. Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. Our Lord Jesus, even in his transfiguration, was willing to speak concerning his death and sufferings. In our greatest glories on earth, let us remember that in this world we have no continuing city. What need we have to pray to God for quickening grace, to make us lively! Yet that the disciples might be witnesses of this sign from heaven, after awhile they became awake, so that they were able to give a full account of what passed. But those know not what they say, that talk of making tabernacles on earth for glorified saints in heaven....

Verse 31. _HIS DECEASE_] την εξοδον αυτον, _That going out_ (or death) _of his_. That _peculiar_ kind of death - its _nature,_ _circumstances_, and _necessity_ being considered. Instead of εξοδον, _thirteen_ MSS. have δοξαν, _glory_. _They spoke of that glory of_ _his, which he was about to fill up_ (πληρουν) _at Jerusalem_. The _AEthiopic_ unites both readings. The _death_ of Jesus was his _glory_, because, by it, he gained the victory over sin, death, and hell, and purchased salvation and eternal glory for a lost world....

WHO APPEARED IN GLORY,.... In a very glorious manner, in most divine and beautiful forms to Christ, and to his disciples: AND SPAKE OF HIS DECEASE, WHICH HE SHOULD ACCOMPLISH AT JERUSALEM; the word, rendered "decease", is "Exodus", the name of the second book of Moses; so called from the departure of the children of Israel out of Egypt, it gives an account of; and which departure is expressed by this word, in Hebrews 11:22 and to which the allusion is here. THE TRANSFIGURATION (Mark 9:2 *, Matthew 17:1 *). Again Jesus is pictured as praying. The theme of His conversation with Moses and Elijah is given, viz. His decease (lit., exodus; significant in connexion with Moses) at Jerusalem. In Luke 9:32 text is better than _mg._ The pronouns in Luke 9:34 are ambiguous: them and the second they may mean Jesus, Moses and Elijah. In Luke 9:36 follow _mg._ Lk. omits the discussion concerning Elijah....
