37-42 How deplorable the case of this child! He was under the power of an evil spirit. Disease of that nature are more frightful than such as arise merely from natural causes. What mischief Satan does where he gets possession! But happy those that have access to Christ! He can do that for us which his disciples cannot. A word from Christ healed the child; and when our children recover from sickness, it is comfortable to receive them as healed by the hand of Christ....

Verse 39. _A SPIRIT TAKETH HIM, AND HE SUDDENLY CRIETH OUT_] πνευμα λαμβανει αυτον. This very phrase is used by heathen writers, when they speak of _supernatural_ influence. The following, from _Herodotus_, will make the matter, I hope, quite plain. Speaking of _Scyles_, king of the _Scythians_, who was more fond of Grecian manners and customs than of those of his countrymen, and who desired to be privately _initiated into the Bacchic mysteries_, he adds: "Now because the Scythians reproach the Greeks with these _Bacchanals_, and say that to imagine a god driving men into paroxysms of madness is not agreeable to sound reason, a certain _Borysthenian_, while the king was performing the ceremonies of initiation, went out, and discovered the matter to the Scythian army in these words: 'Ye Scythians ridicule us because we celebrate the _Bacchanals_, και ημεας ο θεος λαμβανει, and the GOD PO...

EXPOSITION LUKE 9:1 _The Master sends out the twelve on a mission_. LUKE 9:1 THEN HE CALLED HIS TWELVE DISCIPLES TOGETHER. The Galilee ministry was just over; _outwardly_ it had been a triumphant success; vast crowds had been gathered together. The Master was generally welcomed with a positive enthusiasm; the people heard him gladly. Our Lord had been on the mountain, and had been transfigured; and when he came down, the first person that he met was the devil, with whom he had to come in contact. LUKE 9:37_ A_. HEALING OF THE DEMONIAC BOY (Mark 9:14 *, Matthew 17:14 *). Lk. is careful to say this was on the next day. The child is again an only one (Luke 7:12; Luke 8:42). The Gr. word for dashed him down is one that was used by prize-fighters. With Luke 9:43_ a cf. Luke 5:17; Luke 5:26_....
