And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. AND WHEN HE HAD THUS SPOKEN, HE WENT BEFORE. See the note at Mark 10:32, and Remark 1 at the close of that section. John 12:1: "Then Jesus, six days before the Passover" - probably after sunset on the Friday Evening, or at the commencement of the Jewish Sabbath, which preceded the Passover - "came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom He [had] raised from the dead." 28-40 Christ has dominion over all creatures, and may use them as he pleases. He has all men's hearts both under his eye and in his hand. Christ's triumphs, and his disciples' joyful praises, vex proud Pharisees, who are enemies to him and to his kingdom. But Christ, as he despises the contempt of the proud, so he accepts the praises of the humble. Pharisees would silence the praises of Christ, but they cannot; for as God can out of stones raise up children unto Abraham, and turn the stony heart to himself, so he can bring praise out of the mouths of children. And what will be the feelings of men when the Lord returns in glory to judge the world!...

Verse 28. _HE WENT BEFORE_] Joyfully to anticipate his death, say some. Perhaps it means that he walked at the _head_ of his disciples; and that he and his disciples kept on the road before other companies who were then also on their way to Jerusalem, in order to be present at the feast....

EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. AND WHEN HE HAD THUS SPOKEN,.... When he had delivered the above parable, in order to remove the prejudices of his disciples, and the multitude, concerning a temporal kingdom, and to give them true notions of his own kingdom, and the case of the Jewish nation: HE WENT BEFORE; his disciples: he was the foremost of them in the journey; he proceeded at the head of them, with great cheerfulness and eagerness: ASCENDING UP TO JERUSALEM; through the lower lands of Judea, to the city of Jerusalem, which was built on higher ground; where he was to eat his last passover, and suffer, and die, in the room, and stead, of his people; and this shows how willing, and greatly desirous he was to finish the work of redemption he came about....

Luke 19:1. _And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house._ Remember that the Lord Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die; and there he was the patient, suffering Lamb of God; but here he speaks in that commanding tone which well became the Prince of the House of David: «Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.»...

V. IN JERUSALEM -- CHAPTER 19:28-21:38 CHAPTER 19:28-48 _ 1. The Triumphal Entry in Jerusalem. (Luke 19:28 .)_ 2. Weeping over Jerusalem. (Luke 19:41 .) 3. The Purification of the Temple. (Luke 19:45 .) Luke 19:28 The triumphal entry of the Lord into Jerusalem has been before us already in Matthew and Mark. He is presented as King. Luke gives an interesting addition. The multitude of disciples rejoiced and praised God for all the mighty works they had seen. “Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” The angelic announcement was “peace on earth”;

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY (Mark 11:1 *, Matthew 21:1 *). There is nothing peculiar in Lk.'s narrative except Luke 19:28, which recalls Luke 9:51, till we come to Luke 19:37. There the crowd is defined as consisting of disciples, and their exultation ascribed to the mighty works which they had seen.
