And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. AND HE RAN BEFORE, AND CLIMBED UP INTO A SYCAMORE TREE (THE EGYPTIAN FIG, WITH LEAVES LIKE THE MULBERRY) TO SEE HIM: FOR HE WAS TO PASS THAT WAY. Thus eager to put himself in the way of Jesus, low as his motive was, he was rewarded by what he little dreamt of....

1-10 Those who sincerely desire a sight of Christ, like Zaccheus, will break through opposition, and take pains to see him. Christ invited himself to Zaccheus' house. Wherever Christ comes he opens the heart, and inclines it to receive him. He that has a mind to know Christ, shall be known of him. Those whom Christ calls, must humble themselves, and come down. We may well receive him joyfully, who brings all good with him. Zaccheus gave proofs publicly that he was become a true convert. He does not look to be justified by his works, as the Pharisee; but by his good works he will, through the grace of God, show the sincerity of his faith and repentance. Verse Luke 19:4. _HE RAN BEFORE_] The shortness of his stature was amply compensated by his _agility_ and _invention_. Had he been as _tall_ as the generality of the crowd, he might have been equally unnoticed with the rest. His getting into the tree made him conspicuous: had he not been so _low_ of stature he would not have done so. Even the _imperfections_ of our _persons_ may become subservient to the grace of God in our eternal salvation. As the passover was at hand, the road was probably crowded with people going to Jerusalem; but the fame of the cure of the blind man was probably the cause of the concourse at this time....

EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. This sort of trees used to grow in plains and valleys, as appears from some passages of Scripture, 1 Kings 10:27 and from Jewish writings i; and certain it is, that Jericho was in such a situation. Lk. here inserts an incident and a parable between Mark 10:52 and Matthew 11:1. LUKE 19:1. JESUS AND ZACCHÆ US (Lk. only). The incident is akin to that of Levi, Luke 5:27. The tree which Zacchæ us used was a fig-mulberry, one with a short trunk and horizontal branches. Jesus, seeing him there, probably asked the bystanders who he was, and at once sees a way of redeeming an outcast.
