And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. AND THEY BROUGHT HIM TO JESUS. Matthew here gives an important particular, omitted by the other Evangelists. He says "they brought the donkey and the colt." Of course, the unbroken colt would be all the more tractable by having its dam to go along with it. The bearing of this minute particular on the prophecy about to be quoted is very striking. AND THEY CAST THEIR GARMENTS UPON THE COLT, AND THEY SET JESUS THEREON - He allowing them to act this part of attendants on royalty, as befitting the state He was now, for the first and only time, assuming. Matthew here notes the well-known prophecy which was fulfilled in all this, on which we must pause for a little: "All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet ...

28-40 Christ has dominion over all creatures, and may use them as he pleases. He has all men's hearts both under his eye and in his hand. Christ's triumphs, and his disciples' joyful praises, vex proud Pharisees, who are enemies to him and to his kingdom. But Christ, as he despises the contempt of the proud, so he accepts the praises of the humble. Pharisees would silence the praises of Christ, but they cannot; for as God can out of stones raise up children unto Abraham, and turn the stony heart to himself, so he can bring praise out of the mouths of children. And what will be the feelings of men when the Lord returns in glory to judge the world!...

EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. That is, the colt: AND THEY CAST THEIR GARMENTS UPON THE COLT; that is, the disciples, who brought him to Jesus; the Persic version here, as in Matthew 21:7 renders it very wrongly, "Jesus put his own garment on its back, and sat on it"; it follows, AND THEY SET JESUS THEREON; in order to ride upon him, as he did to Jerusalem....

Luke 19:1. _And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house._ Remember that the Lord Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die; and there he was the patient, suffering Lamb of God; but here he speaks in that commanding tone which well became the Prince of the House of David: «Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.»...

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY (Mark 11:1 *, Matthew 21:1 *). There is nothing peculiar in Lk.'s narrative except Luke 19:28, which recalls Luke 9:51, till we come to Luke 19:37. There the crowd is defined as consisting of disciples, and their exultation ascribed to the mighty works which they had seen.
