And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. AND HE MADE HASTE ("AND COME DOWN,") AND CAME DOWN ("FOR TODAY I MUST ABIDE AT THY HOUSE,") AND RECEIVED HIM JOYFULLY. Whence this so sudden "joy" in the cold bosom of an avaricious publican? The internal revolution was as perfect as it was instantaneous. 1-10 Those who sincerely desire a sight of Christ, like Zaccheus, will break through opposition, and take pains to see him. Christ invited himself to Zaccheus' house. Wherever Christ comes he opens the heart, and inclines it to receive him. He that has a mind to know Christ, shall be known of him. Those whom Christ calls, must humble themselves, and come down. We may well receive him joyfully, who brings all good with him. Zaccheus gave proofs publicly that he was become a true convert. He does not look to be justified by his works, as the Pharisee; but by his good works he will, through the grace of God, show the sincerity of his faith and repentance. Verse Luke 19:6. _RECEIVED HIM JOYFULLY._] He had now _seen_ WHO he was, and he wished to _hear_ WHAT he was; and therefore he rejoiced in the honour that God had now conferred upon him. How often does Christ make the proposal of lodging, not only in our house, but in our heart, without its being accepted! We lose much because we do not attend to the _visitations_ of Christ: he _passes by _- he blesses our neighbours and our friends; but, often, neither curiosity nor any other motive is sufficient to induce _us_ to go even to the house of God, to hear of the miracles of mercy which he works in behalf of those who seek him....

EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. Lk. here inserts an incident and a parable between Mark 10:52 and Matthew 11:1. LUKE 19:1. JESUS AND ZACCHÆ US (Lk. only). The incident is akin to that of Levi, Luke 5:27. The tree which Zacchæ us used was a fig-mulberry, one with a short trunk and horizontal branches.
