And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; AND WHEN HE WAS COME NIGH, EVEN NOW AT THE DESCENT OF THE MOUNT OF OLIVES (JUST AS HE APPROACHED THE CITY), THE WHOLE MULTITUDE OF THE DISCIPLES - in the wider sense of that term - "that went before and that followed" (Matthew 21:9.) - both the van and the rear of this immense mass, BEGAN (OR PROCEEDED), TO REJOICE AND PRAISE GOD WITH A LOUD VOICE. 28-40 Christ has dominion over all creatures, and may use them as he pleases. He has all men's hearts both under his eye and in his hand. Christ's triumphs, and his disciples' joyful praises, vex proud Pharisees, who are enemies to him and to his kingdom. But Christ, as he despises the contempt of the proud, so he accepts the praises of the humble. Pharisees would silence the praises of Christ, but they cannot; for as God can out of stones raise up children unto Abraham, and turn the stony heart to himself, so he can bring praise out of the mouths of children. And what will be the feelings of men when the Lord returns in glory to judge the world!...

EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. To the city of Jerusalem, and which was then in sight, EVEN NOW AT THE DESCENT OF THE MOUNT OF OLIVES; being come to the foot of that mount, which lay to the east of Jerusalem, and was about five furlongs from it, or a little more than half a mile o: THE WHOLE MULTITUDE OF THE DISCIPLES: not only the twelve, but the large company that followed Christ out of Galilee, and were joined by more in Judea, as they came along, some going before him, and others behind him. The Arabic and Persic versions divide these words, and read, "the multitude, and the disciples"; not only the apostles, but the whole body of the people that were with Christ: BEGAN TO REJOICE, AND PRAISE GOD, WITH A LOUD VOICE, FOR ALL THE MIGHTY WORKS THAT THEY HAD SEEN; calling to mind the many miracles he had wrought in Galilee, at Cana, Capernaum, and other places, and now, as he passed th...

And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house._ Remember that the Lord Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die; and there he was the patient, suffering Lamb of God; but here he speaks in that commanding tone which well became the Prince of the House of David: «Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.»...

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY (Mark 11:1 *, Matthew 21:1 *). There is nothing peculiar in Lk.'s narrative except Luke 19:28, which recalls Luke 9:51, till we come to Luke 19:37.
