And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, AND WHEN HE WAS COME NEAR, HE BEHELD THE CITY, AND WEPT OVER IT. "Mine eye" said the weeping prophet, "affecteth mine heart" (); and the heart in turn fills the eye. 41._And wept over it. _As there was nothing which Christ more ardently desired than to execute the office which the Father had committed to him, and as he knew that the end of his calling was to gather _the lost sheep of the house of Israel, _(Matthew 15:24,) he wished that his coming might bring salvation to all. This was the reason why he was moved with compassion, and _wept over _the approaching destruction of the city of Jerusalem. For while he reflected that this was the sacred abode which God had chosen, in which the covenant of eternal salvation should dwell — the sanctuary from which salvation would go forth to the whole world, it was impossible that he should not deeply deplore its ruin. EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. Of Jerusalem; being now nearer, and in a situation to take a full view of it, he lift up his eyes, and looking wistfully on it, and beholding the grandeur and magnificence of it, the number of the houses, and the stately structures in it, and knowing what calamities, in a few years, would come upon it; with which being affected, as man, he looked upon it, AND WEPT OVER IT; touched with a tender concern for it, his natural passions moved, and tears fell plentifully from his eyes. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house._ Remember that the Lord Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die; and there he was the patient, suffering Lamb of God; but here he speaks in that commanding tone which well became the Prince of the House of David: «Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.»...

The multitude of disciples rejoiced and praised God for all the mighty works they had seen. “Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” The angelic announcement was “peace on earth”;

THE FALL OF JERUSALEM PREDICTED (Lk. only)._ Cf._ the words of Jesus to the daughters of Jerusalem, Luke 23:28. The passage takes the place of the withering of the fig-tree narrated by Mk. and Mt., which Lk. has already dealt with in different fashion, Luke 13:6. The use of the word bank (Luke 19:43), _i.e._ rampart, has been held to show that the prediction, if not composed, was at least revised, after the Fall of Jerusalem. LUKE 19:44.
