EXPOSITION LUKE 19:1 _Jesus lodges in the house of Zacchaeus, _"_the_ _chief among the publicans_"_ at Jericho. _This episode, which took place at Jericho just before the Lord's entry into Jerusalem the last time, is peculiar to this Gospel. That the source was Hebrew (Aramaic) is clear from the wording of the narration. Some brief Hebrew (Aramaic) memoir was given to St. Luke, whence he derived his information of this most interesting and instructive incident of the last journey of the Master. AND HE WENT INTO THE TEMPLE,.... Being come into the city, he alighted from the colt he rode on, and having committed it to the care of a proper person to return it to the owner, he went up directly to the temple, of which he was the Lord and proprietor, and where he had some work to do the few days he had to live. AND BEGAN TO CAST OUT THEM THAT SOLD THEREIN, AND THEM THAT BOUGHT; that traded in sheep, and oxen, and doves; see John 2:15. The Ethiopic version adds here, as there, "and overthrew, the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves"....

Luke 19:1. _And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house._ Remember that the Lord Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die; and there he was the patient, suffering Lamb of God; but here he speaks in that commanding tone which well became the Prince of the House of David: «Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.»...

THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE (Mark 11:15 *, Matthew 21:12 f.*). Lk. abbreviates; only the sellers are ejected. Jesus teaches daily in the Temple, a statement repeated at Luke 20:1 and Luke 21:37; Luke 19:48 points to the popularity of Jesus in Jerusalem, _cf_. Luke 21:38; Luke 23:27; Luke 23:48....
