And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick. AND THEY THAT WERE SENT, RETURNING TO THE HOUSE, FOUND THE SERVANT WHOLE THAT HAD BEEN SICK. In Matthew we read, "And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way: and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed the self-same hour" (), teaching, that as in these bodily diseases, so in the salvation of the soul, all hinges on faith. No doubt this was conveyed to him in the form of a message through the "friends" that brought the second message. Whether Jesus now visited this centurion we are not informed. 1-10 Servants should study to endear themselves to their masters. Masters ought to take particular care of their servants when they are sick. We may still, by faithful and fervent prayer, apply to Christ, and ought to do so when sickness is in our families. The building places for religious worship is a good work, and an instance of love to God and his people. Our Lord Jesus was pleased with the centurion's faith; and he never fails to answer the expectations of that faith which honours his power and love. The cure soon wrought and perfect....

Verse Luke 7:10. _FOUND THE SERVANT WHOLE_] This cure was the effect of the _faith, prayer_, and _humility_ of the centurion, through which the almighty energy of Jesus Christ was conveyed to the sick man. But these very graces in the centurion were the products of grace. It is God himself who, by the gifts of his mercy, disposes the soul to receive its cure; and nothing can contribute to the reception of his grace but what is the fruit of grace itself. The apostle says, _The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath_ _appeared unto all men_, Titus 2:11. It should therefore be our concern, not to resist the operations of this grace: for though we cannot endue ourselves with by gracious disposition, yet we can quench the Spirit, by whose agency these are produced in the soul. THE CENTURION'S SERVANT (Matthew 8:5 *). Lk.'s version is peculiar through the introduction of two sets of intermediaries Jewish elders and friends. Thus he keeps the Gentile centurion himself (as well as his servant) from contact with Jesus, and is satisfied with recording the esteem in which the pagan soldier (like Cornelius, Acts 10) was held, and the extension of Jesus-' beneficence and His appreciation of faith beyond Jewry....

When Jesus had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he went into Capernaum. The servant of a certain centurion was so ill that he was going to die, and he was very dear to him. When he heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him and asked him to come and save his servant's life. They came to Jesus and strenuously urged him to come.
