And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. AND THERE CAME A FEAR ON ALL - a religious awe, AND THEY GLORIFIED GOD, SAYING, THAT A GREAT PROPHET IS RISEN UP AMONG US; AND, THAT GOD HATH VISITED HIS PEOPLE - after long absence more than bringing back the days of Elijah and Elisha. For they, though they raised the dead, did so laboriously; Jesus immediately, and with a word: they confessedly as servants and creatures, by a power not their own; Jesus by that inherent "virtue," which "went out of Him," in every cure which He performed. 16._And fear seized all _A sense of the divine presence must have brought _fear _along with it: but there is a difference between the kinds _of fear _Unbelievers either tremble and are dismayed; or, struck with alarm, murmur against God: while devout and godly persons, moved by reverence, willingly humble themselves. _Fear, _therefore, is here taken in a good sense, because they gave the honor which was due to the power of God which they had beheld, and rendered to God not only homage, but thanksgiving. _God hath visited his people _I understand this to refer not to every kind of _visitation, _but to that which would restore them to their original condition. 11-18 When the Lord saw the poor widow following her son to the grave, he had compassion on her. See Christ's power over death itself. The gospel call to all people, to young people particularly, is, Arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light and life. When Christ put life into him, it appeared by the youth's sitting up. Have we grace from Christ? Let us show it. He began to speak: whenever Christ gives us spiritual life, he opens the lips in prayer and praise. When dead souls are raised to spiritual life, by Divine power going with the gospel, we must glorify God, and look upon it as a gracious visit to his people. Let us seek for such an interest in our compassionate Saviour, that we may look forward with joy to the time when the Redeemer's voice shall call forth all that are in their graves. May we be called to the resurrection of life, not to that of damnation....

Verse Luke 7:16. _GOD HATH VISITED HIS PEOPLE._] Several MSS. and versions add, εις αγαθον, _for good_. Sometimes God visited his people in the way of judgment, to consume them in their transgressions; but it was now plain that he had visited them in the most tender compassion and mercy. CAME A FEAR ON ALL - An “awe” or solemnity at the presence of one who had power to raise the dead, and at the miracle which had been performed. GLORIFIED GOD - Praised or honored God that he had sent such a prophet. THE SON OF THE WIDOW OF NAIN (Lk. only). This incident is conditioned by the reply to the Baptist's inquiry in Luke 7:22, the dead are raised up. It is more difficult than the story of Jairus-' daughter, and represents the intermediate step between that incident and the raising of Lazarus (John 11). There is no mention of faith on anyone's part. Loisy rather fancifully sees in it a symbol of Jesus-' work in saving Israel.
