And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. AND WHEN HE HEARD OF JESUS - like the woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:27), and the Syrophenician woman (Mark 7:25). 1-10 Servants should study to endear themselves to their masters. Masters ought to take particular care of their servants when they are sick. We may still, by faithful and fervent prayer, apply to Christ, and ought to do so when sickness is in our families. The building places for religious worship is a good work, and an instance of love to God and his people. Our Lord Jesus was pleased with the centurion's faith; and he never fails to answer the expectations of that faith which honours his power and love. The cure soon wrought and perfect....

Verse Luke 7:3. _ELDERS OF THE JEWS_] These were either _magistrates_ in the place, or the _elders_ of the _synagogue_ which the centurion had built, Luke 7:5. He sent these, probably, because he was afraid to come to Christ himself, not being a Jew, either by nation or religion. In the parallel place in Matthew, he is represented as coming to Christ himself; but it is a usual form of speech in all nations, to attribute the act to a person which is done not by himself, but by his _authority_....

EXPOSITION LUKE 7:1 The _servant _(_or slave_)_ of the centurion of Capernaum is healed._ LUKE 7:1 NOW WHEN HE HAD ENDED ALL HIS SAYINGS. This clearly refers to the sermon on the mount. That he was come, as the Ethiopic version adds, into the city of Capernaum; or of his miracles, which he had done there, and elsewhere: HE SENT UNTO HIM THE ELDERS OF THE JEWS: in whom he had an interest, judging himself, being a Gentile, very unworthy and unfit to go himself, and ask a favour of so great a person as Christ was, such was his modesty and humility. These elders he sent, were not the more ancient inhabitants of the city, called זקני עם הארץ, "the elders of, or among the common people", as distinguished from זקני תורה, "the elders of the law", or those that were old in knowledge; of both which it is said by R. Simeon ben Achasia m, that "the elders of the common people, when they grow old, their knowledge fails in them, as it is said, John 12:20 but so it is not with the "elders of the law"; but when they grow old, the

THE CENTURION'S SERVANT (Matthew 8:5 *). Lk.'s version is peculiar through the introduction of two sets of intermediaries Jewish elders and friends. Thus he keeps the Gentile centurion himself (as well as his servant) from contact with Jesus, and is satisfied with recording the esteem in which the pagan soldier (like Cornelius, Acts 10) was held, and the extension of Jesus-' beneficence and His appreciation of faith beyond Jewry....

When Jesus had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he went into Capernaum. The servant of a certain centurion was so ill that he was going to die, and he was very dear to him. When he heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him and asked him to come and save his servant's life. They came to Jesus and strenuously urged him to come. "He is," they said, "a man who deserves that you should do this for him, for he loves our nation and has himself built us our synagogue." So Jesus went with them. _when he heard of Jesus_ Rather, having heard about Jesus. _he sent unto him the elders_ Rather, elders (_Zekanim_), with no article. These -elders" were doubtless some of the ten functionaries, whom the Jews also called _Parnasim_, -shepherds." Their functions were not in any respect sacerdotal....
