11-18 When the Lord saw the poor widow following her son to the grave, he had compassion on her. See Christ's power over death itself. The gospel call to all people, to young people particularly, is, Arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light and life. When Christ put life into him, it appeared by the youth's sitting up. Have we grace from Christ? Let us show it. He began to speak: whenever Christ gives us spiritual life, he opens the lips in prayer and praise. When dead souls are raised to spiritual life, by Divine power going with the gospel, we must glorify God, and look upon it as a gracious visit to his people. Let us seek for such an interest in our compassionate Saviour, that we may look forward with joy to the time when the Redeemer's voice shall call forth all that are in their graves. May we be called to the resurrection of life, not to that of damnation....

EXPOSITION LUKE 7:1 The _servant _(_or slave_)_ of the centurion of Capernaum is healed._ LUKE 7:1 NOW WHEN HE HAD ENDED ALL HIS SAYINGS. This clearly refers to the sermon on the mount. That great discourse evidently occupied a position of its own in the public ministry of the Lord. Its great length, its definite announcement of the kind of reign he was inaugurating over the hearts of men, its stern rebuke of the dominant religious teaching of the day, its grave prophetic onlooks,—all marked it out as the great manifesto of the new Master, and as such it seems to have been generally received. THE SON OF THE WIDOW OF NAIN (Lk. only). This incident is conditioned by the reply to the Baptist's inquiry in Luke 7:22, the dead are raised up. It is more difficult than the story of Jairus-' daughter, and represents the intermediate step between that incident and the raising of Lazarus (John 11). There is no mention of faith on anyone's part. Loisy rather fancifully sees in it a symbol of Jesus-' work in saving Israel. The widow represents the daughter of Zion (Jerusalem) losing her only son (Israel) and miraculously regaining him through Jesus. May we trace the influence of 1 Kings 17:17 and 2 Kings 4:33? _throughout all Judaea_ The notion that St Luke therefore supposed Nain to be in Judaea is quite groundless. He means that the story of the incident at Nain spread even into Judaea....
