Luke 7:12

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. NOW WHEN HE CAME NIGH TO THE GATE OF THE CITY, BEHOLD, THERE WAS A DEAD MAN CARRIED OUT, [ exekomizeto (G1580)] - in the act of being so. Dead bodies, being ceremonially unclean, were not allowed to be buried within the cities-though the kings of David's house were buried in the city of David-and the funeral was usually on the same day as the death. THE ONLY SON OF HIS MOTHER, AND SHE WAS A WIDOW - affecting particulars, and told with delightful simplicity....

12._The only son of his mother. _The reason which induced Christ to restore the young man to life was, that he saw the _widow _bereft of her _only son, _and had compassion on her: for he did not withhold his favor till some one requested it, as he did on other occasions; but anticipated the prayers of all, and _restored the son to his mother, _by whom nothing of this sort was expected. We have here a striking emblem of his freely bestowed compassion in raising us from death to life. _By touching the coffin _he intended perhaps to show, that he would by no means shrink from death and the grave, in order to obtain life for us. He not only deigns to touch us with his hand, in order to quicken us when we are dead, but, in order that he might raise us to heaven, himself descends into the grave....

11-18 When the Lord saw the poor widow following her son to the grave, he had compassion on her. See Christ's power over death itself. The gospel call to all people, to young people particularly, is, Arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light and life. When Christ put life into him, it appeared by the youth's sitting up. Have we grace from Christ? Let us show it. He began to speak: whenever Christ gives us spiritual life, he opens the lips in prayer and praise. When dead souls are raised to spiritual life, by Divine power going with the gospel, we must glorify God, and look upon it as a gracious visit to his people. Let us seek for such an interest in our compassionate Saviour, that we may look forward with joy to the time when the Redeemer's voice shall call forth all that are in their graves. May we be called to the resurrection of life, not to that of damnation....

No burying places should be tolerated _within_ cities or towns; much less in or about _churches_ and _chapels_. THE GATE OF THE CITY - Cities were surrounded by walls, to defend them from their enemies. They were entered through “gates” placed at convenient distances from each other. In most cities it was not allowed to bury the dead within the walls; hence, they were carried to some convenient burial-place in the vicinity of the city. THE SON OF THE WIDOW OF NAIN (Lk. only). This incident is conditioned by the reply to the Baptist's inquiry in Luke 7:22, the dead are raised up. It is more difficult than the story of Jairus-' daughter, and represents the intermediate step between that incident and the raising of Lazarus (John 11). There is no mention of faith on anyone's part. Loisy rather fancifully sees in it a symbol of Jesus-' work in saving Israel.
