The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; THE DAY FOLLOWING - that is, the day after the miracle of the loaves and the stormy night, or the day on which Jesus and His disciples landed at Capernaum. 22._Next day. _Here the Evangelist relates circumstances from which the multitude might conclude that Christ had gone across by divine power. There had been but one ship; they see it go away without Christ; next day, ships come from other places, by which they are conveyed to Capernaum; and there they find Christ. It follows that he must have been conveyed across in a miraculous manner. There is an intricacy and apparent confusion ( ἀνακόλουθον) in the words, but still the meaning of them is plain enough; for, in the 22nd verse, John says that _there had been but one ship_, and that all saw it leave the shore and that place, and that it had not Christ as a passenger; and, in the 23rd verse, he adds that _ships came from Tiberias, _by which the multitude passed over, which had remained on the shore, blockading, as it were, every outlet, that Christ might not escape....

22-27 Instead of answering the inquiry how he came there, Jesus blamed their asking. The utmost earnestness should be employed in seeking salvation, in the use of appointed means; yet it is to be sought only as the gift of the Son of man. Him the Father has sealed, proved to be God. Verse 22. _THE PEOPLE WHICH STOOD ON THE OTHER SIDE_] ἙϚηκως περαν της θαλασσης, _Standing by the sea side_. The people were not on the _other_ side, i.e. in _Perea_, as our version states, but on that side where Bethsaida lay: see the notes on Matthew 14:25; Matthew 14:34, and on Mark 6:45. The Greek word, περαν, says Bishop _Pearce_, seems to signify in Scripture sometimes _on the side of_, and sometimes _on this side of_: see Joshua 5:1. and 1 Macc. 9:34. The Hebrew word אבר _abar_, signifies _by the side_: Exodus 28:26...

THE PEOPLE WHICH STOOD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA - That is, on the east side, or on the same side with Jesus. The country was called the region beyond or on, the other side of the sea, because the writer and the people lived on the west side.
