And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. AND (OR, 'BUT') JESUS SAID UNTO THEM, I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. Henceforth the discourse is all in the first person - "I," "Me" - which occurs in one form or other, as Stier reckons, 35 times. HE THAT COMETH TO ME - to obtain what the soul craves, and as the only all-sufficient and ordained Source of supply. SHALL NEVER HUNGER; AND HE THAT BELIEVETH ON ME SHALL NEVER THIRST - shall have conscious and abiding satisfaction....

35._I am the bread of life. _First, he shows that _the bread_, which they asked in mockery, is before their eyes; and, next, he reproves them. He begins with doctrine, to make it more evident that they were guilty of ingratitude. There are two parts of the doctrine; for he shows whence we ought to seek _life, _and how we may enjoy it. We know what gave occasion to Christ to use those metaphors; it was because _manna _and daily food had been mentioned. But still this figure is better adapted to teach ignorant persons than a simple style. When we eat _bread _for the nourishment of the body, we see more clearly not only our own weakness, but also the power of divine grace, than if, without, _bread, _God were to impart a secret power to nourish the body itself. When by his grace we are enabled to live a life of faith in the Son of God, holy tempers follow, and acceptable services may be done. God, even his Father, who gave their fathers that food from heaven to support their natural lives, now gave them the true Bread for the salvation of their souls. Coming to Jesus, and believing on him, signify the same. Christ shows that he is the true Bread; he is to the soul what bread is to the body, nourishes and supports the spiritual life. THE DESIRE FOR A SIGN: THE TRUE MANNA. After raising their expectations He had refused to go forward. In answer to their surprise at finding Him so soon across the lake He tells them why. Their hopes are confined to the material. They must seek the higher food, which leads to true life. They ask what they are to do. Believe in God's Messenger. But He has refused to act as God's Messiah. By what sign will He justify His claim to their faith? Will He give the new manna from heaven which Messiah was expected to give? (_Cf._ Apoc.
