But the reader will do well to mark here again the important note of time introduced quite parenthetically at . Verse 4. AND THE PASSOVER, THE FEAST OF THE JEWS, WAS NIGH. This, according to our reckoning, was the third Passover since our Lord entered on His public ministry. See the note at . These verses are a little involved, from the Evangelist's desire to mention every circumstance, however minute, that might call up the scene as vividly to the reader as it stood before his own view....

1-14 John relates the miracle of feeding the multitude, for its reference to the following discourse. Observe the effect this miracle had upon the people. Even the common Jews expected the Messiah to come into the world, and to be a great Prophet. The Pharisees despised them as not knowing the law; but they knew most of Him who is the end of the law. Yet men may acknowledge Christ as that Prophet, and still turn a deaf ear to him....

Verse John 6:4. _AND THE PASSOVER - WAS NIGH._] This happened about ten or twelve days before the third passover which Christ celebrated after his baptism. _Calmet_. For thirty days before the Passover there were great preparations made by the Jews, but especially in the last nineteen days, in order to celebrate the feast with due solemnity. Similarly John 7:1 would naturally follow work in the south, not in the north. The author has probably modified the order in which the material out of which his gospel has grown took shape. It was not far from April 1st, and the trees were in full leaf. The proximity of the greatest of the festivals that were celebrated at Jerusalem (the Passover, which began that year A. D. 29, on April 17th), would give occasion for. large increase of visitors around Galilee, as the crowds gathered for the journey. The gathering at such. time of. crowd of 5,000 men, attracted by so famous. teacher, is not incredible. The mention of the Passover is an aid to the chronology of the Lord's ministry.
