69._And we have believed and known. _The verbs are in the past tense, but they may be changed into the present tense, _we believe and know_, but it makes little difference in the meaning. In these words Peter gives a brief summary of faith. But the confession appears to have nothing to do with the matter in hand, for the question had been raised about _eating the flesh of Christ_. The corrupt and wicked heart of man often makes that an occasion for offence, which is matter of the greatest comfort. Instead of _Christ the Son of the living God_, some excellent MSS., BCDL, and others, read ὁ αγιος του Θεου, _the holy one of_ _God_; and this reading _Griesbach_ has received into the text, leaving out του ζωντος, _the living_. χριστος, and αγιος convey nearly the same meaning; but the AEthiopic, as usual, retains both. του ζωντες is omitted by BCDL, H, the _Coptic,_ _Sahidic, Armenian_, later _Persic, Vulgate_, all the _Itala_ but one, and by the _Anglo-Saxon_; which last _Griesbach_ has not noticed....
