41._The Jews therefore murmured concerning him. _The Evangelist explains the cause of the murmuring to have been, that the Jews were offended at the mean condition of Christ’s human nature, (150) and did not perceive in him any thing Divine or heavenly. Yet he shows that they had a twofold obstruction. The Father's will is, that not one of those who were given to the Son, should be rejected or lost by him. THE JEWS THEN MURMURED AT HIM,.... When they found that he spoke of himself as the true bread, the bread of God, and bread of life, and as descending from heaven: and which was to be fed upon in a spiritual manner by faith, which they were ignorant of, and had no desire unto: and thus being disappointed of the delicious corporeal food they expected, they grew uneasy, and displeased, BECAUSE HE SAID I AM THE BREAD WHICH CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN; for though, as yet, he had not said this in so many words, and in this direct form, as afterwards, in John 6:51; yet he had said what amounted to it, and which might be easily gathered from John 6:35 The Vulgate Latin reads, "I am the living bread"; and the Persic version, "I am the bread of life". And this last renders the first clause "mocked at him"....

THE MURMURING OF THE JEWS. The changes of persons here (_cf._ John 6:22, the multitude), and of place in John 6:59, show that this chapter is not intended to record a continuous conversation, but to give specimens of Christ's teaching as the author has come to see its meaning, of objections raised and how they were answered. Jesus-' claims are challenged on the ground of His lowly origin (_cf._ Luke 4:22; Mark 6:3). The answer takes up the thought of John 6:37. FEEDING UPON CHRIST (JOHN 6:41-71) At this point our Lord's discourse is interrupted. Hitherto he had been addressing the multitude; now for the first time we read "the Jews," which, as already explained, means adherents of the ruling party which was violently hostile to Christ. Whether these Jews were among the multitude hitherto addressed in this discourse we cannot tell. If so, they had not made themselves prominent and were lost in the crowd. It may be that the regular discourse in the synagogue ended with verse 40, that these official "Jews" were not present, but were soon informed of what he said, and came with their objections.
