After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. For the exposition, see the notes at Mark 6:30. But the reader will do well to mark here again the important note of time introduced quite parenthetically at . Verse 4. AND THE PASSOVER, THE FEAST OF THE JEWS, WAS NIGH. This, according to our reckoning, was the third Passover since our Lord entered on His public ministry. See the note at . These verses are a little involved, from the Evangelist's desire to mention every circumstance, however minute, that might call up the scene as vividly to the reader as it stood before his own view....

15-21 Here were Christ's disciples in the way of duty, and Christ was praying for them; yet they were in distress. There may be perils and afflictions of this present time, where there is an interest in Christ. Clouds and darkness often surround the children of the light and of the day. They see Jesus walking on the sea. Even the approaches of comfort and deliverance often are so mistaken, as to become the occasions of fear. Nothing is more powerful to convince sinners than that word, "I am Jesus whom thou persecutest;" nothing more powerful to comfort saints than this, "I am Jesus whom thou lovest." If we have received Christ Jesus the Lord, though the night be dark, and the wind high, yet we may comfort ourselves, we shall be at the shore before long....

Verse John 6:21. _IMMEDIATELY THE SHIP WAS AT THE LAND_] How far they were from the place at which they landed, when our Lord came to them, we know not. But the evangelist seems to speak of their _sudden_ arrival there as extraordinary and miraculous....

How far they were from the land we know not, but there is no evidence that there was a miracle in the case. The word translated “immediately” does not of necessity imply that there was no interval of time, but that there was not a long interval. Thus, in Matthew 13:5, in the parable of the sower, “and immediately (the same word in Greek) they sprung up,” etc.,...

When they knew who he was; and especially he was the more welcome, as they were in distress; and he able, as they well knew, to help them: AND IMMEDIATELY THE SHIP WAS AT THE LAND WHITHER THEY WENT; which was done, as Nonnus observes, by a divine motion; for not only the wind ceased, but another miracle was wrought; the ship was in an instant at the place whither they intended to go....

And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased._ Many of them curiosity-mongers wanting to see more wonders wrought, others of them sick themselves, and anxious to be healed. Wherever Jesus went, a throng went with him. John 6:3. _And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples._ That was his frequent posture when his disciples were gathered around him. He sat at his ease, and talked to his hearers. He was not very demonstrative in his oratory, but spoke calmly and quietly, and left the truth to find its own way into the minds and hearts of men....

AFTER THE MIRACLE: THE WALKING ON THE SEA. Though the details are obscure, Jn. gives the key to the situation by recording the dangerous enthusiasm of the crowds, as later on he shows the dangers which threatened from their disillusionment. If we compare the other accounts it would seem that Jesus made the disciples, who no doubt shared the popular excitement, put off in their boat while He dealt with the crowd. Then He retires to the higher ground to pray. As He does not return the disciples put out to sea (?) in the direction of Bethsaida. After rowing about three or four miles, they see Him on, or by the sea, and are frightened. He reassures them, and they wish to take Him into the boat but do not do so, probably a true detail. HE WENT UP... INTO THE SHIP. John says, "they willingly received him;" and, on account of the wind abating, they came at once to port. Christ's getting in the ship was their salvation. He can both calm the tempest round us, and carry us safe to heaven. IMMEDIATELY THE SHIP WAS AT THE LAND. Unless the word "immediately" has more latitude than is common with us, this implies another miracle. PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS. 1. He who could make the grain grow could also multiply the loaves. 2. Our duties and our privileges are not measured by what we can do of ourselves, but by what God is willing to do through us. We cannot turn the machinery of the factory, but we can let the water on to the wheel. We cannot push the steamship across the ocean, but we can let on the steam for the engine to do it. 3.
