34._Give us always this bread. _There is no doubt that they speak ironically, to accuse Christ of vain boasting, when he said that he was able to give _the bread of life. _Thus wretched men, while they reject the promises of God, are not satisfied with this evil alone, but put Christ in their room, as if he were chargeable with their unbelief....

Verse 34. _LORD, EVERMORE GIVE US THIS BREAD._] Either meaning, "Let the miracle of the manna be renewed, and continue among us for ever:" or, "Let that bread of which thou hast spoken, become our constant nourishment." THE DESIRE FOR A SIGN: THE TRUE MANNA. After raising their expectations He had refused to go forward. In answer to their surprise at finding Him so soon across the lake He tells them why. Their hopes are confined to the material. They must seek the higher food, which leads to true life. They ask what they are to do. Believe in God's Messenger. But He has refused to act as God's Messiah. By what sign will He justify His claim to their faith? Will He give the new manna from heaven which Messiah was expected to give? (_Cf._ Apoc. LORD, EVERMORE GIVE US THIS BREAD. One cannot fail to see the resemblance to the case of the woman of Sychar. There the emblem is water, here _bread;_ there Christ offers water that will permanently satisfy the soul's thirst, here food that satisfies its hunger; there the woman asks for this water, here they ask for this bread, not yet fully comprehending what it is. Like Ponce de Leon, who sought the fountain of immortal youth in Florida, they thought that this food would literally make them immortal and eagerly clamored for such. boon....
